New Year, New Hue! Pantone's 2018 Color of the Year

Pantone’s beginning reaches back to New York City in the 1950’s when the company was founded as a commercial printing business. When looking to systemize and simplify the company’s stock of pigments and production of colored inks a part time employee developed the Pantone Guide of color swatches which is widely used by graphic designers, reproduction and printing houses. Since 2000 the Pantone Color Institute declares a particular color “Color of the Year.” Twice a year the company hosts a secret meeting of representatives from various nations color standards groups. After two days of presentations and debate they choose the color for the following year. The results are published in the “Pantone View” which fashion designers and consumer oriented companies purchase to help guide their designs and planning for future products. We are happy to announce that the 2018 Pantone Color of the Year is “Ultra Violet!” Ultra Violet is a dramatically provocative and thoughtful blue based purple shade that communicates originality, ingenuity and visionary thinking that points us toward the future taking our awareness and potential of a higher level. Mysterious deep purples have long been symbolic of artistic brilliance. Musical icon Price brought shades of Ultra Violet to the forefront of western pop culture as personal expressions of individuality. Historically, there has been a mystical or spiritual quality attached to Ultra Violet. The color is often associated with mindfulness practices to those seeking refuge from today’s over-stimulated world. The Pantone Color of the Year has come to mean much more than what’s trending in the world of design. It’s also a reflection of what’s needed in the world today.
