Trollbeads – Where Did the Harvest Dreams Begin?
The Trollbead story began in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1976, when Soren “Silversmith” Nielsen created the first Trollbead, “Faces.” The silver bead is named for the 6 faces that decorated it. Soren’s father owned a jewelry shop in Central Copenhagen where he sold his beads. At the time the trending fashion was to wear a single silver bead on a leather cord necklace instead of hanging the bead from an eyelet. To accommodate this trend Nielsen placed an opening through the center of the bead. Lise Aagaard, Soren’s sister, later began to place the beads on silver bracelets. Lise went on to become the founder of Trollbeads and opening her own jewelry store. One day a customer asked Lise to place more than one bead on her bracelet. The storekeeper was surprised but added another bead on the bracelet. Thus, the bead-on-bracelet jewelry concept was born. From one customer’s suggestion, the Trollbead adventure grew. Today Trollbeads are retailed in over 400 cities world-wide. Until the year 2000 all beads were designed by the Nielsen/Aagaard family, To add diversity Lisa invited 10 Danish jewelry designers to each draft a Trollbead creation to add to the collection. Today, there are over 100 designers contributing. The first lamp work glass beads were added to the collection in 2001. Because these beads are hand made no two beads are identical. For the past ten years Trollbeads has hosted a Peoples Bead competition allowing Trollbead fans to submit a design. The 2018 theme was “I dream about…” and the winning bead is a faceted lamp work glass bead representing the northern lights over Norway designed by a Latvian artist. The Trollbead catalog continues to grow currently featuring over 600 beads, each with its own unique design and story. Every story truly does have a bead!
